Laser hair removal explained

The 808nm diode laser is absorbed as heat by the pigment (melanin) in the hair, which damages the hair root and reduces regrowth. It can reduce unwanted hair over the long term, but it cannot be called permanent removal. It can be used on the face and body, and works best on dark, thick hair. It is less effective on white, grey, blond and light red hair. Because hair grows in cycles, several sessions are needed.

Who it suits

01

People who shave or pluck often

02

People prone to ingrown hairs or redness after shaving

03

Anyone who wants smoother skin

Please tell the doctor before treatment if you are pregnant, have a skin infection, wounds or an active cold sore in the area, have been sunburnt or tanned recently, or have a tattoo in the area. Please also discuss it first if you use isotretinoin or medicines that make skin more sensitive to light (some antibiotics, for example), or if a hormonal condition may be affecting hair growth.

What to expect

1

Consultation

The doctor checks your skin type, hair colour, health and medicines, and discusses whether it is suitable.

2

Preparation

The area is cleansed and the hair should be shaved short. Eye protection is provided.

3

Laser

The strength is set for your skin and hair, and the laser is applied over the area. It may feel like a rubber band snapping against the skin.

4

Aftercare

A cooling product is applied, and you receive advice on avoiding sun, using sunscreen and when to return for the next session.

Results and recovery

Results

After each session many people notice thinner, finer hair and slower regrowth. Results usually become clearer after several sessions, commonly about 6 to 8, spaced about 4 to 8 weeks apart. The face is often quicker than the body. Hormonal conditions can cause hair to grow back. Results cannot be guaranteed.

Recovery and side effects

You can usually return to normal activities straight away. Redness and small bumps around the hair follicles are common and settle within hours to a few days. In the first week after treatment, avoid sun, heat (hot baths, sauna) and rubbing the skin. For about 4 weeks before treatment, do not wax or pluck, and avoid tanning.

Possible side effects

In most people, side effects are mild and temporary.

  • Redness, mild swelling and small bumps around hair follicles
  • Stinging, warmth or discomfort
  • Temporary darkening or lightening of the skin (especially after sun exposure)
  • Rarely, burns, blisters, scarring, infection or increased hair growth may occur. Contact us straight away if you have severe pain, blisters, pus or fever. If you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe widespread rash, go to a hospital straight away.

Results vary from person to person.
